The Scottish government is backing the award-winning campaign. Communities Minister Tom Arthur is encouraging businesses to accept payments with the new card. In addition, the Scottish Tourist Board is working with Perth-based fintech company Miconex to deliver the scheme.
Miconex operates over 60 gift card programmes across the UK and North America. It is also responsible for the Town and City Gift Card programme in Scotland.
In addition, it has partnered with Scotland’s Towns Partnership. As part of this, Miconex is introducing digital gift card technology in 17 towns across Scotland.
This means customers can pick up the card on the go. They can then spend the money at merchants who are registered with Scotland’s Towns Partnership.
Scotland Loves Local is supported by companies including Marks & Spencer, Boots, Spar, Aldi and Schuh. These companies are aiming to help the initiative spread throughout the country.
Canada’s Food Island
The Miconex Gift card for Canada’s Food Island is a prepaid card that provides fast access to PEI’s best experiences. It can be used for purchases at participating local businesses, including food markets, local attractions, and seaside eateries.
In addition to encouraging consumers to shop local, the Canada’s Food Island Gift Card program is designed to stimulate the economy. After launching, over 100,000 cards were sold in the first 18 months of the program. A week after the launch, almost half the cards had sold out.
This new programme has already gained the support of many merchants. As of September 2020, 176 locations have signed up as gift card merchants. These merchants include Murphy’s Pharmacy, Co-op stores in O’Leary and Tignish, and Mel’s Convenience Store.
The Food Island Gift Card is available online, in-store at participating merchants, and at participating Co-op and Murphy’s pharmacies. The cards are redeemable at the participating merchants and can be purchased in $50 increments.
The initial release of the cards offered a 20% discount on purchases. Customers can link their existing payment cards to the card and gain reward points for spending at these local businesses.
The program has generated $4 million in local spend in the first year. Almost all of the cards have been sold.
