The Nebraska Cornhuskers got some new faces in the quarterback room, but Casey Thompson has the upper hand to be below the middle to start the 2022 college football season.
Nebraska head coach Scott Frost said the team’s starting quarterback position is Thompson’s “job to lose.” ON3.com reported:.
“I don’t know if he separated himself. He just played well,” Frost said. “Other guys have played well too. He’s clearly the guy with the most experience we have. I want him to get better and better. I want all the guys to get better. We have really good players whoever it is. Being a quarterback .
“But you see a lot of consistency, and you can tell he’s got experience because he’s doing some things that young quarterbacks don’t. He’s got a really good feeling in the pocket, a really good commando presence.”
Thompson made the switch to Nebraska after three seasons in Texas, where he was the primary starter in 2021. Meanwhile, quarterback Chubba Purdy transferred to Nebraska after two seasons in the state of Florida, where he was given scattered playing time.
Thompson finished 2021 with 2,113 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 154.7 quarterback rating, completing 63.2% of his passes. He also registered 157 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
Frost sees more “zipper” on Thompson’s strides since his offseason thumb procedure.
“I have to tell you that his game has really gone up since the spring, and I think that has something to do with it,” Frost said of Thompson’s procedure. “We’ve got a lot of quarterbacks playing well now, but I’m really happy with what I’ve seen from Casey and we’re putting him to work. I just think he’s a little more confident, more. But probably a little bit more zip on the ball and just a little bit better grip on football, honestly.”
Adrian Martinez was Nebraska’s first quarterback from 2018-21. He transferred to the state of Kansas after the 2021 season. The Cornhuskers finished the regular season 3-9 (1-8 in Big Ten play) with eight of nine losses in single-score games.
Nebraska opens the 2022 season against Northwestern on August 27 in Dublin, Ireland.
