Senate Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Sunday forced Senate Democrats to pass amendments to the Inflation Reduction Act that would have added elements of the Build Back Better Act.
sanders suggested an amendment that would raise the corporate tax rate to pay for an extended child tax credit. The amendment failed 97-1, with Sanders being the sole vote for the amendment.
Sanders has pushed for more left-wing policies in the Inflation Reduction Act, which did not include more benefits, such as increased child tax credits. Sanders proposed the amendment during the “vote-a-rama” portion of the reconciliation process, where senators can table virtually any number of amendments.
Some senators took offense at Sanders offering amendments to change the bill before it comes to the Senate floor for a final vote.
“I don’t think it helps. I don’t think it’s helpful for the child tax credits,” Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO).

“I don’t want to embarrass anyone,” Sanders said, defending his strategy. He said his proposals have a lot of support at the Senate conference of the Democrats.
“Are they frustrated that we have to expand and renew the child credit? … Every amendment I have tabled today has broad support,” said the Democratic Vermont socialist.
Despite internal squabbles over changing the bill, Sanders said he would vote to pass the bill even without his proposed changes.
Sanders isn’t the only Democrat to propose amendments; sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) offered a health care amendment that was also shot down by Democrats.
